2016 amtierte. Die Amtszeit dauert fünf Jahre. Aus Österreich hatte der Vors
itzende der österreichischen Bischofskonferenz, Erzbischof Franz Lackner, an
dem Treffen teilgenommen.</p>

In einer Abschlusserklärung wandte sich der CCEE gegen eine „vorherrschende materialistische Kultur“, die sowohl den christlichen Glauben als auch die menschliche Zivilisation als Ganzes bedrohe. „Wir dürfen uns nicht fürchten, sondern müssen vereint sein“, heißt es in dem Dokument. Die Stimme des CCEE sei zwar nicht mächtig, aber sie diene der Verbreitung einer jahrhundertealten Botschaft, die sich auf den Namen Jesus Christus beziehe. Er sei die „wahre Hoffnung“ Europas.
Während ihrer Versammlung blickten die europäischen Bischöfe auch auf das 50-jährige Bestehen des CCEE zurück. Am Donnerstag feierten sie mit dem Papst eine Messe im Petersdom. Dabei warnte Franziskus vor falschen Sicherheiten. Die Christen des Kontinents seien versucht, es sich „in unseren Strukturen, in unseren Häusern und in unseren Kirchen bequem zu machen“, so der 84-Jährige in seiner Predigt. Die „Befriedigung eines gewissen Konsenses“ reiche aber nicht aus, da sich „um uns herum die Gotteshäuser leeren und Jesus immer mehr vergessen wird“.
Der Rat der Europäischen Bischofskonferenzen mit Sitz in Sankt Gallen/Schweiz (lat. Consilium Conferentiarum Episcoporum Europae) will die Zusammenarbeit der katholischen Bischöfe auf dem Kontinent fördern. Dem 1971 gegründeten Gremium gehören derzeit 39 Mitglieder an. Gemeinsam repräsentieren sie die katholische Kirche in 45 europäischen Ländern.
