Sie war 1960 eher zufällig in seiner Heimat Pakistan gelandet. Am Leid der Menschen konnte und wollte sie nicht vorübergehen. Bis zu ihrem T od 2017 kümmerte sie sich um Kranke und Ausgestoßene in Armenvierteln.&nbs p; Lobo führt ihr Lebenswerk fort. Lepra, sagt er bei seinem Salzburgbesuch , sei heute unter Kontrolle. Doch es gibt neue Herausforderungen.</p>
<p>Di e junge Ärztin und Ordensschwester Ruth Pfau war auf dem Weg nach Indien. D as fehlende Visa zwang sie zu einem Stopp in Pakistan. Ihre Mitschweste rn von der Gesellschaft der Töchter vom Herzen Mariä führten sie in eine Leprakolonie. „Das verdreckte Wasser reichte ihnen bis zu den Knien. Die S chwestern baten die junge Ärztin aus Deutschland zu helfen“, berich tet Mervyn Lobo über den Anfang von Sr. Ruth Pfaus Mission. Doch diese lehn te zunächst ab. „Das kann ich nicht.“ Ihre Berufung erfuhr sie nachts, alleine in ihrem Zimmer: „Das ist, was der Herr von mir möchte. Ich bleib e.“ Die Menschen kamen von überall in Pakistan, um sich behandeln zu lass en. Dr. Pfau reiste schließlich selbst in die entlegendsten Winkel des Land es und nahm dafür große Strapazen auf sich. „Einmal sollten wir in ein D orf in den Bergen. Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel brauchen dafür 18 Stunden. I hr wäre ein Geländewagen zur Verfügung gestanden. Sie rechnete und entsch ied, der Bus ist billiger.“ Da es unterwegs keine Toilettenpausen gab, fin g sie für solche Reisen eine Woche vorher an zu fasten. Sie trank wenig und aß kaum. „Das machte sie noch als sie schon in ihren 80ern war“, erzä hlt Lobo.</p>

Mervyn Lobo führt das Lebenswerk von Sr. Ruth Pfau weiter, das Marie-Adelaide-Leprosy-Center (MALC) in Karachi.
SALZBURG (eds) / „Wir reden nicht nur, wir tun etwas.“ Diesem Motto folgt Mervyn Lobo. Ausgegeben hat es seine einstige „Chefin“, Sr. Ruth Pfau. Sie war 1960 eher zufällig in seiner Heimat Pakistan gelandet. Am Leid der Menschen konnte und wollte sie nicht vorübergehen. Bis zu ihrem Tod 2017 kümmerte sie sich um Kranke und Ausgestoßene in Armenvierteln. Lobo führt ihr Lebenswerk fort. Lepra, sagt er bei seinem Salzburgbesuch, sei heute unter Kontrolle. Doch es gibt neue Herausforderungen.
Die junge Ärztin und Ordensschwester Ruth Pfau war auf dem Weg nach Indien. Das fehlende Visa zwang sie zu einem Stopp in Pakistan. Ihre Mitschwestern von der Gesellschaft der Töchter vom Herzen Mariä führten sie in eine Leprakolonie. „Das verdreckte Wasser reichte ihnen bis zu den Knien. Die Schwestern baten die junge Ärztin aus Deutschland zu helfen“, berichtet Mervyn Lobo über den Anfang von Sr. Ruth Pfaus Mission. Doch diese lehnte zunächst ab. „Das kann ich nicht.“ Ihre Berufung erfuhr sie nachts, alleine in ihrem Zimmer: „Das ist, was der Herr von mir möchte. Ich bleibe.“ Die Menschen kamen von überall in Pakistan, um sich behandeln zu lassen. Dr. Pfau reiste schließlich selbst in die entlegendsten Winkel des Landes und nahm dafür große Strapazen auf sich. „Einmal sollten wir in ein Dorf in den Bergen. Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel brauchen dafür 18 Stunden. Ihr wäre ein Geländewagen zur Verfügung gestanden. Sie rechnete und entschied, der Bus ist billiger.“ Da es unterwegs keine Toilettenpausen gab, fing sie für solche Reisen eine Woche vorher an zu fasten. Sie trank wenig und aß kaum. „Das machte sie noch als sie schon in ihren 80ern war“, erzählt Lobo.
Die Armut ist noch immer da
Das Marie-Adelaide-Leprosy-Centre (MALC) von Ruth Pfau in Karachi ist heute eine der bedeutendsten Hilfsorganisationen Pakistans. 150 „Ableger“ in allen Regionen entstanden, die 150.000 Menschen erreichen. Der anfangs hoffnungslose Einsatz gegen die hochansteckende Krankheit Lepra hat mit den Jahren den Schrecken verloren. Die Armut der Ausgestoßenen jedoch verschwand nicht. MALC ist mittlerweile auch im Kampf gegen andere Leiden wie Tuberkulose aktiv.
Ein anderer Bereich ist das Mutter-Kind-Programm. „Damit starteten wir Mitte der 90er Jahre in einem afghanischen Flüchtlingscamp. Vor allem Mütter und Kinder waren unterernährt. Wir verteilten Nahrungsmittel. Doch die Mädchen entwickelten sich nicht. Warum? Die Eltern gaben das Essen nur den Buben. Wir mussten die Rationen verdoppeln.“ Lobo spricht an, was nach wie vor ein Problem in der männerdominierten Gesellschaft und in den Familien ist: Die Benachteiligung der Mädchen und Frauen. „Viele werden schon sehr jung verheiratet. Sie bekommen früh Kinder. Die Todesrate bei der Geburt ist hoch, weil die Mädchen einfach oft zu schwach sind.“
Kirche ist eine weltweite Gemeinschaft von Christinnen und Christen. Im Oktober – im Monat der Weltmission – feiern wir die weltweite Kirchengemeinschaft. Für die Gestaltung und Umsetzung sind die Päpstlichen Missionswerke, kurz Missio, zuständig.
Höhepunkt des Monats der Weltmission ist der Weltmissions-Sonntag (WMS) an jedem vorletzten Sonntag im Oktober, heuer ist das der 24. Oktober. Die Sammlung am Weltmissions-Sonntag ermöglicht, dass die jungen Kirchen in den ärmsten Ländern der Welt leben und weiter wachsen können. Neben der Grundversorgung werden pastorale und soziale Projekte finanziert.
Jedes Jahr steht ein Land im Mittelpunkt. 2021 ist es Pakistan, das zwischen dem Iran und Indien im Südwesten von Asien liegt. Christinnen und Christen stellen mit 3 Millionen Menschen eine kleine Minderheit in Pakistan. In dem muslimisch dominierten Land sind sie, wie andere religiöse Minderheiten auch, Diskriminierung und Verfolgung ausgesetzt. Sie arbeiten in schlecht bezahlten Jobs, viele leben in großer Armut.
Weltmission in der Erzdiözese
